Lab 7 (all sections) - Week of October 24-28, 2005

Library Assignment, Part 2 – 5 points

Due on Monday, Nov 14 at 5 pm

E-mail your completed assignment to Philip Herold, heroL008@umn.edu

1. Select a topic
  • It may be the same one as Library Assignment Part 1, or a new topic
  • Select from the list below, or choose your own

2. Select an index from the list below, and search for articles on your topic

  • Use an index that you did NOT use in Assignment 1
  • Make good use of language when you search

3. Choose several articles that look relevant, and use MNCAT, http://mncat.lib.umn.edu/, the U Libraries online catalog, to find two that you believe are available on campus, in print.

4. Also in MNCAT, find a book that relates to your topic.

5. Go to the appropriate library (probably Forestry or Magrath) and locate either the book or one of the articles you have identified. Look at it carefully to see if it really addresses your topic. PHOTOCOPY the page with the title of the item.

6. E-mail the citations to the 2 articles and the book to the address listed above. In your message, also include:

  • Your name
  • Your topic
  • The index that you used
  • The terms you used in your search
  • Which item you found in the Library
  • Whether it was relevant to your topic or not
  • A 1-sentence comment about the process

7. Turn in the photocopy with the title of the item you found in the Library in Room 115 Green Hall, the main office. There will be a box especially for assignments for this course. The photocopy has the same due date as the e-mail; note that 115 Green Hall closes at 4:30PM.
