Tips for Searching
University of Minnesota Forestry Library Online Bibliographies
Keyword Searching
- Keyword is the default.
- Searching is by keyword, not keyword phrase. Proximity searching is not
possible.
- When searching for hyphenated terms (e.g. balled-and-burlapped) always use
the hyphen.
- When searching for terms with alternate spellings, e.g. privatization, privatisation,
search under both spellings.
Author searching
- Search by surname only; do not include author's initials.
- When searching for hyphenated surnames or names including apostrophes (e.g.
Cline-Smith, O'Hara) search both with and without punctuation for maximum
results
Multiple authors
- If a publication has more than four authors, the co-authors are listed in the
annotation field. A search by keyword will retrieve multiple authors.
Boolean operators
- The search engine defaults to a boolean AND. Combining terms using the boolean
OR is also possible.
Truncation
Marking records
- Records can be marked for printing, downloading or e-mailing.
